Twist
Absolutely love the colours in this piece of Oamaru stone, it's like the stone was meant to be this design.
The size alone was a challenge for me with this piece. My first challenge was how do I get it on my work bench as this was very heavy. This is where family comes in handy.
Once I had drawn the rough outline I then had to visualise how it would look 3D and where to make my first cuts. Because of the size everything had to be cut by hand, and shaped as I went. The hardest part was figuring out how to tackle the inside part of the sculpture to give the flow effect. and make the stone look like it was twisting.
It’s not until I have actually finished and sanded when I stand back and depending on what I see all depends on the design I decide on. Sometimes like this piece colour and fossils determine how I will finish each sculpture off.
This particular piece has a fossil on the bottom of the twist and I wanted to leave it in, I could see it was going to have some colour and not until I used sealant was when I was delighted to see the beautiful shapes the colour gave with in the sculpture. The colour is perfect for this Oamaru stone sculpture.
As most artists will say hours never come into it as I've lost count with this one.
