Using my family ancestry and my Kiwi heritage into new Oamaru stone designs
At the beginning of 2021 my family decided to do take part in finding out about our genealogy. For many reasons but mainly our son wanted to know what countries he may have come from. To no surprise all 3 of us had a large Scottish presence and our son’s came back with 96% Scottish.
I always knew we had Scottish heritage, I mean how could we not with the family name McDonald on my side and Campbell on my husbands. Be interesting to know what our ancestors would think on that one! As let us just say the history books write a lot about the feud between both clans.
Along with mine was a bit of Irish and a small percentage of British.
But although that is my ancestry what I am above all else is a Kiwi, New Zealand is my home it is where I relate to the most. This often shows in my sculptures with the Koru and ferns. I love nature and the beauty it can bring with in art.
So to cut a long story short over these holidays I started drawing and looking into what Scottish and Irish art was like and I wanted to combine my history and present together into my Oamaru Stone sculpture.
