My love for carving began in 2018

Here is the reason why my sculpture has no ears, Lucy lost hers due to cancer about 8 yrs before she passed.

Our beautiful cat Lucy passed away in 2018 at the age of 21.

My family and I looked through many shops for something we could place in our garden for her. Unfortunately everything we found was out of our price range.

A dear friend Les offered me some Oamaru stone and told me to create something. From there I taught myself and my passion and love for carving started. Everyday since I have been learning techniques and how to transform the images I have in my head into stone.

I simply sell my work so I can carve and learn more.

In 2021 I opened my studio as my work was taking over the house, which most creative people will understand.

My name is Megan, as as long as I can remember I have been creative.

My earliest memory is of my father teaching me to use woodworking tools. I wanted my first bike but we couldn't afford one so Dad and I made wooden dolls beds and Mum sewed the bedding for them. They owned a second-hand shop and we sold them there. A few months later my brand new 10speed arrived. That lesson not only taught me skills with tools but that to get anything we have to work hard for it.

Once at high school I was introduced to the love of art and art history. From there I moved on to the Dunedin School of Fine Arts. After my first year which was one of the hardest years I had at that time with the loss of my best friend I never completed my degree.

It wasn't till nearly 20 years later I was drawn back to being creative and started where it all began with wood, until of course I discovered my love of Oamaru stone.

My carvings are carved from the heart because when you have a passion for creating, you want to share that creativity with others.

When purchasing one of my sculptures you know it was carved with love, and whether it is for a gift or for yourself each piece has been specially hand carved.

You can find me at the Port Chalmers Artisan markets which are held every third Saturday of the month.

My Home studio is also open to the public on Fridays 10 am-3 pm or by appointment.
